This week read both assigned chapters from Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness located under “Files” in the Week 11 folder:.
As you read, keep in mind that Essay 3, due May 8th, will ask you to discuss The New Jim Crow. I talk about this a bit in my lecture: it will serve you well to think about this assignment now as you are doing the reading for this week. Review the attached PowerPoint presentation. Once done,
1. Define Culture, Family, and Community and discuss how they are related.
2. Mention and discuss what cultural concepts will you use to provide nursing care to families, communities and, aggregates.
3. Mention and discuss potential health problems in refugees and immigrant populations.
4. Mention and discuss interventions that are culturally sensitive and relevant to address the health concerns of a refugee population.

This course offers a comprehensive overview of the relationship between China, Japan, and the U.S. in the 20th and 21st Centuries by studying their foreign policies in the contexts of interactions with one another and their relative international impact, from the beginning of Japanese and Chinese modernization in the late 19th century to the present.Week 11 lecture and discussion questions Essay
Goals of the course include:
- A degree of understanding of the modernization movement in China and Japan in late 19th-20th centuries.
- Knowledge of American foreign relationship with China and Japan from early 20th century to early 21st century.
- Ability to approach, conceptualize, and analyze the dynamic interactions between China, Japan and the U.S. from the late 1940s to Pearl Harbor.
- Ability to conceptualize and interpret relationships between China, Japan and the U.S. since World War II including recent years.

How to answer Discussion questions:
- Each Discussion question should be answered in TWO ways: by posting your answer and posting a critique/commentary on someone else’s posting. Your grade for each question is based on both your posting and your comments.
- Your answer to the question is due by 10:59pm central time (11:59 pm eastern time) on the following Sunday, e.g. your answer to Discussion Question 1 is due at 10:59pm on Sunday Jan.13. There is a preferred due time for your essay, which is Thursday, so that you have enough time to post two comments to your classmates’ essays by Sunday. For instance, the preferred due time for week 1 essay is Thursday Jan.10 by 10:59 pm central time, while the mandatory deadline is on Sunday Jan. 13 at 10:59 pm central time
- Your answer and comments should follow the criteria in the discussion question grading rubric.
- Two take-home papers, each 8-10 pages, typed, double spaced. The papers need citations.
You will use the built-in paper topics in the syllabus, under the schedule for the 8th week and 17th week.
